We are a small, friendly club which was started in 1984. We meet in St Andrew’s Church Hall, Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, at 7.30pm on the third Monday of every month, except August and December. At our meetings we have a guest Area Demonstrator, who will arrange 5 or 6 designs, and you can sit back and relax with free tea or coffee. We also have sales tables where you can buy flower arranging mechanics and accessories, and a wide selection of plants, all at bargain prices.
In May, Area Demonstrator Alison Finch, made 5 great designs, each depicting one of her favourite books. This design was Alison’s interpretation of ‘A tree grows in Brooklyn’ – the 1943 novel about a teenage girl from a poor family growing up in New York. The black structure at the back of the design was made out of garden canes and cable ties, all sprayed black to represent the urban environment in which the story is set.
Sue Neale was our demonstrator in July, taking us ‘Around the world in 2 hours’. New members and visitors are always welcome to the club, but this meeting was a special ‘Friends and Family’ evening and we were delighted to see so many new faces. Our Club and Competition Night was on June 19th. Go to our Facebook page and see what you think of our efforts!
Members are often involved in local Church Flower Festivals and other Community events. On May Day members helped local children decorate the pergola in Marine Cove Gardens.
Members also helped at the Burnham EAT event on 27th May by providing stewards for the Bake -Off event. We also helped decorate Our Lady and The English Martyrs Church on 16th and 17th June at the Festival of Flowers and Quilts to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the building.
We also arranged flowers for St Andrews Church celebratory concert on 2 September.
In November, we have an Open Meeting when a National Demonstrator will come to the Princess Theatre and Arts Centre with a Seasonal Display. This year we are fortunate to have Jonathan Moseley, a top National Demonstrator and Judge from TVs’ The Great Allotment Challenge on November 27th. He will also be holding a workshop on November 28th. The club will also be running classes and workshops for beginners and more advanced members throughout the year. Social events are organised as well, and we raise money for charity.
The club is affiliated to the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies (NAFAS), which has charitable status. NAFAS is divided into Areas and we belong to the South West Area, which has around 2,000 members. The South West Area organises education days on various aspects of flower arranging, and our members can go along and participate in these events.
Belonging to NAFAS is an enjoyable experience and will open up a whole new world for you, so why not come along to our club as a guest and find out more? We would be very pleased to see you! Visit our What’s On page to find out what’s happening in the coming months, and you can also see what we’re doing through our Facebook pages.
